Most Nova Scotians participate in aquatic activities, but they have never taken formal lifesaving training. The Lifesaving Society targets its annual Water Smart public education campaign at certain high-risk groups. Water Smart drowning prevention messages are delivered through the media, print and electronic communications, community action, special events, programs and special promotions. Water Smart priorities are based on the drowning research that the Lifesaving Society compiles annually.
